A warm welcome back to the Mill Sessions for Cole Stacey and Joseph O’Keefe who were a rel class act last time they played for us. A Session not to be missed!
Unpretentious, absorbing and far from the madding crowd, India Electric Company’s carefully blended sound vortexes around a supple joining of voice and instruments. Concocted in the Devonshire countryside and Parisian cafes, Cole Stacey and Joseph O’Keefe produce intricately woven textures which belies the fact that there are only two of them.
"So fresh! A big sound for a duo." - BBC 6 MUSIC
Like wandering minstrels roving along the fringes of the 21st century, they have spent much of the last 18 months touring Plymouth to Paris, Sidmouth to Skye and every independent coffee shop that lies between.
"The hardest working acoustic duo in the UK…arguably." - Tom Robinson
From playing jazz on West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival to performing Mendellsohn’s Violin Concerto for Terry Pratchett, Joseph’s virtuosity on violin, accordion, guitar and piano (to name but few) has made him one of the most sought after multi-instrumentalists in the UK. A Cambridge Masters in Mathematics has proven to be invaluable when calculating the escalating petrol costs of carrying an accordion up and down the M6.
Cole, described by Steve Knightley (Show of Hands) as “an impassioned and ambitious singer-songwriter,” has been performing around England with his Faith guitar in hand for several years. He has an uncanny ability to tell the same three ‘jokes’ on stage regardless of surroundings - be it supporting Midge Ure in sellout shows in Scotland or playing to five people in a yurt at Sidmouth Folk Festival.
In 2012, Joseph and Cole released their first album, On Hire, under their own names and it has received airplay from the likes of BBC Radio 3, BBC 6 Music, and ABC Radio (Australia).
"One of the best albums from young songwriters this year." - Steve Knightley (Show of Hands).
Spending a year in Paris learning as many intricities of Gypsy Jazz as they could, they returned to their native Devon to form India Electric Company. Their first album is set for release in Summer 2014, coinciding with extensive touring and numerous attempts at brewing the perfect Aeropress coffee.
